Important Tips for Repairing Drywall
Refreshing your interior with a new crisp coat of paint is a simple enough job, more so when the drywall is in good condition. However, if the drywall is damaged, you will need to repair it before the painting begins. This is usually part of a complete drywall service. We will provide you with a few simple tips that will ensure you have a clean and level surface to paint on.
Small Repairs
Minor drywall imperfections can be filled using either a drywall compound or spackle. However, larger holes will need to be filled using a patch kit or a piece of drywall that has been cut to fill the hole. For the best results, have a professional do the bigger patching jobs, as it is extremely difficult to achieve a clean, smooth repair. If you notice long tiny cracks on your ceiling or walls, they will eventually get longer and wider if you do not attend to them. This is due to the expansion and contraction of wooden studs the drywall is attached.
Nails
Nail heads will often bulge through drywall, which results in cracks in the surface. This is due to the movement of the drywall. To repair these issues, you can use a drywall screw to tighten the sheetrock back against the wooden studs. Then, you can either pull out the nail or hammer it back in and use a drywall patch kit to fill the holes.
Sanding
Once you have completed all of the above, you will need to sand the drywall in order to obtain a smooth and level surface. This must be done before any painting can commence. You can sand using either an orbital sander or do it manually using a block that is covered in sandpaper, depending on the size of the repair.
